August 2001
Ok I was bad - I did not write in my journal at all in August. Today is actually September 18th. I promised myself I would keep it up from here on out though. I'll try to summarize August:
August 7th (9w4d): Finally a doctor's appointment! First doctor's appointment was today - all went well, I actually met with the Nurse Practitioner and won't meet the OB until next week. But I was very happy with the office itself and everyone seemed nice and attentive and really answered all of my questions before I asked them. They did a huge family history and are basing some extra screening tests off of that. I was measuring well and the only huge disappointment was that they tried to hear the baby's heartbeat and couldn't. Of course they said it was really too early, but sometimes it can be heard so they usually try. Needless to say I was quite upset about not hearing the heartbeat, but tried to reassure myself that it really was too early, the placenta can be in the way, and I do believe I am a week behind where the doctor says I am - all of which rationally could be why we didn't hear the heartbeat. It's hard but I'm trying not to think about it.
Tonight we told our parents and grandparents that we were expecting in March. I had wanted to tell my parents in person when we saw them over Labor Day weekend but we just couldn't wait that long. So we called both sets of parent and grandparents at just around 9 weeks pregnant. Needless to say as this will be the first grandchild on both sides they were all very excited! I cautioned them it was still early, but of course we are hoping everything will be OK. All of our fingers are crossed!
August 10th (10w0d): We're off for a week to Myrtle Beach South Carolina. I really need a vacation. Though getting there was rough- crazy traffic in Somerville and Boston trying to get tot he airport, bad weather, flight canceled, rebooked for tomorrow but we managed to convince Delta to get us on an AirTran flight leaving that night at 7 pm. Except because of the weather it didn't leave until midnight. And of course our flight is not direct so we got stuck in the Atlanta airport at 3 a.m. with about 1000 other people. All hotels are booked or ridiculously expensive considering we have to be back at the airport by 7 a.m. for our 8 a.m. flight. Luckily we have our beach towels so we found a quiet carpeted spot in the terminal and spread our towels out and slept. Quite the adventure.
Myrtle Beach was great - my favorite parts were probably walking on the beach at night together. It was just so beautiful and peaceful - I really wish we lived closer to the ocean - maybe someday. We did a lot - water parks, golf, Charleston, plantations, the USS Yorktown, the beach, shopping, and lots and lots of eating. The major downside was that I felt pretty awful most days by 4 p.m. or so so going out to dinner was rough, and I was exhausted by 8 p.m. so it wasn't the most exciting time, but still it was fun. I'll be glad to be past the nausea part of pregnancy though.
August 28th (12w4d): Having dinner with Pam and Trang tonight and finally get to tell them the big news. I'm still nervous about the heartbeat but my next doctor's appointment is in just a few days and everything seems to be going ok so far, so hopefully that is good. So I told them at dinner, snuck it in during the wine ordering, since obviously I couldn't order any. They were both very happy - though I don't think Pam was as surprised as Trang, which surprised me since Trang asks me everytime I see her if I am pregnant yet! So that was fun, and I was so glad to have told them. We tried to call Hang from dinner and I had tried to reach her earlier in the day but we couldn't reach her. I wish she could have been there! But I did get to talk to her and tell her the next day and we're hoping we can all get out to LA for a visit before the baby is born.
